Paddle Power

May 2016

The Vogalonga is a 33 kilometre paddle and rowing boat event through the city of Venice and the lagoon up to Burano.

Each year well over 1,500 boats from all over the world join in, and the 2016 event also included Westin’s Ann Onions paddling as one of the Worcester Busters dragon boat crew. The 2016 event was a record for spectators with over 7,000 visitors arriving to watch.

This year’s Vogalonga took place over the weekend of 14-15 May, and having travelled out on the Friday, enjoyed some sight seeing on Saturday, the Worcester Busters’ crew were ready on the Sunday to paddle in the Venice sunshine.

“The Worcester Busters are aged between 40 and 60 years and this crew have been together for the last five years, paddling and laughing, with breast cancer survival as our common link and bond”, says Ann.

“We were all so excited about taking part in the world renowned Vogalonga, and we were not disappointed! It’s a long route and we were shattered by the end, but the atmosphere was incredible and the views were spectacular. We created a lifetime of memories.”

All participants are issued a diploma of participation a tee shirt and at the end of the event enough medals for the crew are thrown into the boat in St Mark’s Square. The Vogalonga is not a competitive race and there are no winners. It’s all about being there.
